The burden of staying informed in most scientific spheres (science involves more than IT) is growing and if you want any kind of a life you have to find shortcuts. Kurzweil puts out a (free email) newsletter, which covers most major technological advances. The format is quite friendly – a few lines describing the advance, then a hyperlink to the original document if you want to read further. There are daily (infodump option) or weekly (my option) selections. He is a fairly major figure so his other sites may be worth checking.

Us aggressive technophiles must stick together and turn from the dark side of the force. We need bodies to face the forces of darkness, superstition and creationism bravely. A gradual permeation of evil is evident in the SA ethos. There is definitely a Borg influence governing the ANC (resistance is futile…join us or die!). There is a huge, black cloud permanently over the country (beware – this is the Borg). In the final confrontation between the forces of good and evil, we shall stand together, shoulder to shoulder, clean-cut and handsome, surrounded by a nimbus of pearly light, while the ‘pass one, pass all’ forces of darkness ready themselves for the final battle in their roiling black cloud, the 4 horseman of the Apocalypse prancing about overhead, their steeds snorting fire and champing their bits. May the force be with you”.
