Did you know that if you loose your remote with key, you can go to the dealer and give them the VIN and they will give you a new one? No questions asked.

So if you park your car in a regular open spot the thieves only have to look under your windscreen wiper to get your VIN and within 2 days your car is gone.

Try and insert something between the dash and windscreen to cover it but high enough to pull it out again when needed.

This is a method they use to steal your car in seconds.

No, its not

Complete crock of shyte.

The Dealerships do NOT hand out new keys based on the VIN number unless you can prove ownership of the vehicle.

(Oh, and do not follow the advice about obscuring the VIN, it could get you a nice little fine from the police)

Good luck to the dude who tries this... it costs 2k for a set of replacement keys and there is a 2 month waiting time.

Then congrats to you because you get my ****tty car.

I know with BMW you can't get a replacement, you get a programmable key that can only be programed if you have the old key to open the car.

Bullshit!

I ordered a new key from Ford. Was R1700, they needed the VIN number and the car had to be hooked up to the computer at the dealership to program the new key.

LOL, why would thief do this? you do know a stolen car is only worth +- R1000 - R4000 on the street irrelavent what car it is. Once its marked stolen the car is worthless, so the thief doesnt get much cash for the car its the guys that "make" the car legal again.

Also lets be serious here why go through all that trouble getting a key with a VIN number then leaving a paper trail? when you can buy dealership software from china over the internet and put the car in diagnostic mode bypassing the immobilizer and use a blank key to start it? that method is cheaper than a replacement key, is faster and is cost effect since you can steal more cars from that manufacturer.

Thieves are not stupid ....

if a professional thief wants your car, IT WILL BE STOLEN

Bull****. My key became faulty 2 weeks ago and my car couldn't start. I had to pay a breakdown to take my car to the nearest Fiat dealer, so that they can plug it in on the computer and retreive the code needed to encode the key.

What the criminals can do, and very easy at that, is by-pass the system if they know where. Thats how I saved almost R2500, by getting a friend to by-pass my bakkie.

Oi we are so desperate to believe that the universe is against us and there is a huge conspiracy at work, especially in SA. It only takes a few seconds of approaching the problem logically. Would the manufacturers really spend fists full of money to design anti-theft devices if all you needed to circumvent such measures is a number read from a license disc? I doubt it very much...
