I am a telkom ADSL subscriber, and find that every now and then (about once or twice a year) someone steals my data.

My modem is in an office, and lots of people walk in.
I have an idea they find a way to steal my telkom connection password.

When I change my password the problem goes away.

I tend to monitor my downloads after this happens, but after a few months I get lazy .. then they steal again!

Would it be worthwhile to talk to Telkom and ask them to prevent my data from being downloaded from any other phone line except mine? Or could I ask Telkom what is the phone number of the other sessions using my username/password?
Or could I limit my ADSL session to only one?

This month on 10 Nov I had 10 Sessions, and after that day I had 2/3 sessions per day (until my data ran out)
I retrieve my session info from userstats.adsl.saix.net

Anyone out there that can help me track down the culprit?

1. Change password for DSL account.
2. Change password on router/modem.
3. Monitor usage from both the router and Telkom's accounting system.
4. Lock the account to your line only. (Not sure if Telkom products have this)

I know years ago you could see the connections and phone numbers on saix website, not sure if you still can.

userstats.adsl.saix.net

Yes, Telkom can lock your ADSL account to your line.

Strong password on modem access - don't let the browser save it.

WIN.

^^ That a millions times over, but also:

5 Upgrade your Modem/routers Firmware
6 Disable SSH on your Modem/routers
7 Make sure your Wifi is using WPA2 encryption and has a extremely strong password
8 White-list Mac access to wifi only.
9 If its a cheap Chinese Router/Modem, get rid of it, a lot of them have default SSL login credentials that cant be changed.

1. Phoned 10217 - they cannot help - directed me to 0860 124 000
2. 0860 124 000 is a company called KPMG that has no clue why they could be of help.
3. Phoned 10217 - got a number - 0800 005 733
4. Phone 0800 005 733 - "Special Investigations Service Improvement Centre" - music start to play and the the line drop. Tried four time - same scenario.
6. Phoned 10217 - Got a good guy! Told me between 10 and 16 Nov my username was used in Pietersburg.
Pietersburg is about 1400 km from me - no way someone would steal my password and drive there to use it.
Even though he is good, he cannot help me to link the line to the username.
Told me to phone 10213 and select option 2 and again option 2.
7. Phoned 10213 - spoke to Nicole. Nice lady, but she cannot help me. She asked me to phone 10217 and select option 1.

Feeling a bit liking somebody shoved a pine cone in my arse - will change my password (again) and let it be.

ps. My WiFi is not the problem. From 10 Nov to 16 Nov someone in Pietersburg was using my account. That is my problem.
My solution? I do not think there is one.

Change the password of your TI username. Reboot router. Done.

Hmm. The Plot Thickens!

Just remembered - I phoned Telkom on 9 or 10 Nov about a problem, and supplied them with my username and password.
They told me the line had to been reset.

Could that be where my leak is?

^this will solve the problem with the rogue user.

Well someone at work could steal it and give it to a friend/relative that's in Pietersburg. Pity you had no luck getting the phone number.

Are there any logs in that router that can tell you if someone logged into it ?
