Steam at University

I am in res at UCT and Steam doesn't work on their network, so I can't download games and their updates let alone play online. I asked the IT department if they could perhaps unblock some of Steams ports but they said I must make a case to the SRC.

I was wondering if anyone who goes to any of the other SA universities are able to access Steam so as to lend support to my case?

Good luck - it will add so much strain to their network.
Just think how many people will update their games @ 4- 14gig a shot.

If they set the firewall to allow it after hours I'm sure it will be fine.

Steam shares the same highports as torrent traffic, I highly doubt they will do deep packet inspection just for you to play games

It creates allot of system overhead.

Well we only have 3 gig quotas.

Edit: I suppose that doesn't make much sense for downloading games themselves but it still does for updates and/or multiplayer gaming.

I was in res at Stellenbosch two years ago and we were allowed to basically do what we want. Games, torrents anything. But we paid for everything in a pay as you go manner. Between 00:00 and 07:59 it was R0.01 per mb.
