Steam Christmas Gifts?

So i was looking at getting a friend a game or two from Steam as a Christmas gift. I only want them to actually receive the gift on or after Christmas day.
Other than actually buying it on Christmas day, what would be my next option? I also want to make use of the current specials on Steam, can i not buy a game now and only gift it to them on Christmas day?

yes you can. You have the option of adding it to your backpack, or something to that effect.
