I have struggled with downloading games and updates for games on steam for a long time and it only seems to be getting worse. Sometimes my games update just fine - going for full 300+ kB/s until it finishes. Then sometimes, like with a recent Magicka update, it doesn't want to finish. When I start steam up, it downloads a few seconds at a reasonable speed (50 kB/s), then stops. Sometimes it has short intermittent periods when it downloads at 5 kB/s or less. Theoretically, I could download large updates by restarting steam the whole time (quite fun).

I have tried numerous content servers, which includes SA ones and other ones all over the world. I have reinstalled steam. I have tried Openweb, Afrihost and Webafrica accounts: local Openweb account, local and international prepaid Afrihost accounts and also local and international Webafrica accounts.

Well, I'm desperate. I can't find solutions on the web for my problem and I'm so sick of steam. There are some games that I have to play on steam, like Civilization V and Shogun II which I bought this week. I won't be playing Shogun soon, since the 600 MB update will take a few weeks, if not months ().

Any helps or tips will be much appreciated.

Firstly, in Steam: Steam > Settings > Download + Cloud > Make sure that the Download region is approximated to your closest locale (i.e. South Africa -- Johannesburg).

Secondly, CCleaner recently added Steam to its list of things to "clean out." It may or may not remove a bunch of useless files which may or may not help.

Thirdly, go to your \Steam\ directory, delete the *.blob files and start Steam up. It should sort itself out.

Fourthly, if none of the above remedies your problem, and verifying the integrity of a game inside Steam doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.
