Hi guys

In the news section I published an interview article with Stephen White of Telkom. The more I learn about Telkom ADSL, the more I realize why we are getting ignored. They know they have lied to users and have taken wholesale advantage of them. Somebody will need to answer, but nobody at Telkom is willing to say what everybody knows.

It is a great read, and I will leave you with two quotes from the article:

Stephen White, Executive at Telkom
“Yes, we do. Four major benefits, I believe, for users. Firstly, speed – insomuch that the ADSL service we will provide will provide 512 kilobits, compared to 64 kilobits on ISDN, which is significant.”
“I think from October onwards you’ll see great things happening with international bandwidth, with our New Century Cable that’s recently been implemented.”

Does this probation period end on a specific date? When exactly?

Do we expect any changes in the product / price when the pilot phase is over? Do we expect improvements, or more restrictions regarding the cap etc?

As I gather from the interview with Stephen White from Telkom, there should ave been improvements to the ADSL service by October 2002. But it still didn't happen!?

Cheers

In my opinion this "pilot phase" has silently evolved into the real thing and what we have is what we gonna get!!!!!!!!!hooooray for telkom[B)]

ADSL--A Damn Slow Link

I find this one guy, Hilton Evan's reply to the interview quite spot on. Specifically the issue in terms of abuse that Telkom is using to justify their actions.

I quote it here:

<i>'You see, Steven, Telkom (you'll note that I have not referred to you in the first person because you are not Telkom, you simply work for the company, and naturally, I understand that), cannot cry "abuse" simply because it's customers want speed, and wish to spend longer periods than the average person on the internet. Rather charge those who use DSL per minute, but don't suggest that some folks are 'cheating' by using more internet time than others and turn it into a moral argument. This thesis is fatally flawed. Alternately, even if no one uses more than 3GB, if all Telkom's customers happen to be using their DSL facility at the same time, speeds will be sluggish.'</i>

Sorry, forgot the most important part of Hilton Evans's reply:

<i>"So, in conclusion, it has nothing to do with 'abuse' in terms of extended time internet use by DSL customers, but everything to do with THE NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS USING THE INTERNET AT ONE TIME, not so? Perhaps if Telkom dealt with THIS problem - properly - we could reach the speeds that we require, at reasonable costs."</i>

Hi Merlin

What an excellent summary of the problem. It is very unfortunate that we cannot get Telkom to officially comment on these matters. The next round of letters are going out over the weekend, and maybe we get some feedback then.
