Hi guys

I'm looking at getting the following components for my stereo setup at home:

Amp: Yamaha A-S500 (R4500)
Speakers: Boston Acoustics A-25 Bookshelves (R2700)
Turntable: Pro-Ject Debut III (R5000)

What do you guys think of these? Would you recommend anything else in this price range?

There's nothing wrong with the kit you're suggesting, but what is best is very subjective. NAD have entry level kit to compete more or less with the Yamaha.

For a bit* more on the amp, you could also look at hybrid valve amps (www.valveaudio.co.za), have been using one for the past 10 years, and had no failures of any kind in this time.

* ok, so it is at least double :o

Unfortunately, doubling the amp cost will push the whole setup over my budget. Maybe I'll look at the valve amps for a future upgrade :)

Nice set up ...

How much KEF book shelves or B&W bookshelves though?

I've never been a fan of Boston myself

I have the B&W 602 S3's. Very nice speakers and have served me well for the past 10 years.
When I bought them they went for just over R5k, now I believe, they are around R3k.

The Boston A-Series speakers have recieved great reviews from most publications

Perhaps there is a model or two that's good - but not all of them. That's not to say they're bad ... they're just average.

I went to a hi-fi show the once and the guy had R30,000.00 Boston Acoustics hooked up and my cheaper speakers sounded better - even to my girlfriend that knew zero about sound.

Also the older VR (I think) series was just average - but because it carries the name, it was quite expensive.

Make sure you have a good, solid and stable audio stand for the turntable :)
You should demo what you're looking at buying (and also what you haven't thought of).
B&W and Monitor Audio were my favourites when I was looking for a pair of speakers... I ended up getting Monitor Audio RS6's.
The Pro-ject Debut 3 disappointed me but there's not a whole lot available in this country at that price point. Maybe try looking for a Rega P3 second hand which is an awesome TT.
Not sure about the Yamaha amp, never listened to it...

But yeah, equipment is very subjective, something that sounds awesome to me, might not sound that great to you. Which is why you should definitely go to the store(s) and demo as much as you can to get a feel of what you like :)
