Stereo setup with PC input

Hi guys,

I'm looking to get a decent stereo setup going for the PC. I was thinking BnW bookshelfs or similar (BnW not being the cheapest of brands) with a fairly good amp for the application, with a couple of inputs. I'm not at all fussed about bass since I'm more into rock and metal and I generally game with headphones but on the odd occassion that the wife is out of the house and I feel like having some boom with my headshots, I suppose a small amount would be required. It doesn't warrant the expense of a subwoofer, however.

Any suggestions? I suppose anything by Yamaha would be great for the amplifier? Speaker suggestions? I don't know brands that make decent bookshelfs that don't border on the absurdly expensive, which I don't feel is warranted by my application, which will be MP3 and such, so not the world's most amazing sound quality. I'm just somewhat fed up with the seeming lack of midrange on my current cheapo 2.1 setup.

Model numbers or better yet, links to places I can buy suggestions from, would be appreciated.

Stereo amps from Yamaha, Onkyo, NAD, Rotel would be a good bet. You don't need new stuff, second hand will do.

Bookshelves from Monitor Audio, B&W, Mission, Polk etc would be fine. Read reviews, listen to them, check price and buy. Second hand will do as well.
 
I don't really have a budget, to be honest. I like quality and I'm of the belief that you get to a point where you pay twice the price for 5% of a performance increase, which I don't like getting to. I'm looking at mid-to-highend. I'm completely up for going to second hand equipment, if I can find good condition stuff.
 
Not sure if you're incorporating a sound card? Or just running optical from mobo to receiver.

But Asus Xonar Essence ST//STX owns, both for 2 channel loud speakers and headphones.
 
Also try asking around on avforums.co.za , some good bargains on the classifieds section at times.

I'll ideally be feeding a digital signal. But with that being said, I already have a rather nice sound card in there with plenty of the required grunt and don't see the point in upgrading, as the only bump up would possibly be coming from the top-end Xonar.

What you got? Is it amplified (related to 'phones only).
 
I'm in a similar position. Need to get some better stereo sound from my pc.

Currently considering the Fiio E9+E7 combo to act as USB DAC and headphone amp. Then a pair of Sennheiser HD202's. For speakers I'm currently using a set of Krator Neso2 powered speakers. Will consider upgrading these sometime in the future, bur for now I'm happy with what I'm getting from them.

Spoke to the guys at Hi-Fi Installations to get a rough quote. I suggested a Cambridge Audio Azur 350A stereo amplifier which they sell for R3 590 and they suggested a pair of Monitor Audio BX2 bookshelf speakers which come in at R 2 550, so near as makes no difference, R6100 for a good stereo system. A tad on the expensive side perhaps, but not something I'm unwilling to entertain.
