The story

New Zealand opening batsman Craig Cumming underwent a successful operation in Johannesburg on Friday to repair broken bones in his face.

Cumming sustained a depressed fracture of the cheekbone and a broken jaw when he was felled by a bouncer from South African fast bowler Dale Steyn on the first day of the second test in Centurion on Friday.

"He was operated on last night, and several plates were inserted into his face in the cheek and jaw area," New Zealand team manager Lindsay Crocker told reporters on Saturday.

Crocker said Cumming, who is diabetic, was kept in intensive care overnight for observation.

Cumming's doctors were satisfied with his condition, Crocker said.

"He's come through it pretty well," Crocker said.

"He was a bit of a mess but his surgeons are happy with the work they've done."

Crocker said Cumming would stay in hospital until Sunday or Monday and that he would not be fit to travel back to New Zealand for approximately a week.

Wonder if Steyn will buy him a beer :D

Stupid visor.

I know you can't bring the visor all the up in front the eyes, but there has to be another design to prevent this sort of thing.

There was just enough room between the cap and the top bar of the visor for the ball to slip in through.

The same thing happened to Merrick Pringle a number of years ago. Remember him?

Ironic listening to Allan Donald saying how awful it was when in the 1996 WC the UAE captain came out to face him without a helmet. So Donald bounced him. Damn lucky he didn't kill the idiot.

Those visors should be crash tested. That one simply collapsed in onto his cheek. You can see from the slowmo, that it did not sneak in between the helmet and the visor, it hit the top bar of the visor side-on, bent it out of shape and straight into his face. had his head been turn directly into the ball, the energy would have been dissipated to both visor bases. because he looked away (ironic isn't it) the energy of the ball had nowhere to go.

that must have stung like hell. Hope he is ok.

Getting hit in the box is worse I reckon, especially if it cracks, and some "skin" gets caught in there.

Happened to Gary Kirsten once, box cracked right down the middle.

Said he always wore two boxes after that. Some things you just don't leave to chance.

He can get away with it in test matches, one days wont be so easy...
Steyn VS Bond VS Shoaib VS Lee!!:)
Whens the next Int Competition?
