Stiffy Disk not working

Just loaded Windows XP Pro (without a stiffy disk installed) and then only afterwards fitted a new stiffy disk. Changed the BIOS etc. to 1,44mb etc. and connected the cables etc.

In "My Computer" I can see the stiffy disk and the light is on at the stiffy slot but when inserting a disk and trying to read it, it says "Insert a Stiffy in Drive A:".

Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how it can be fixed (besides reformatting / reloading windows again as I've loaded all my other programs etc.).

Cheers

Heinz

If the light on the stiffy drive is permanently on, it means you have inserted the FDD cable upside down, make sure the pins line up (pin 1 on the cable is on pin 1 on the card)

Light stays on permanently - disk or no disk ....
I'm inserting a disk that has info on already so formatting it isn't an option ...

Not quite sure I understand Kasyx's advise - The FDD cable runs from the motherboard to the stiffy disk - on the motherboard it can only fit in one way (because of a slot that ensures that it can only be inserted 1 way) and I've tried turning the cable and inserting it into the stiffy both ways - still no luck ??

nope your cable is the wrong way around

kasyx is totally right

your cable has gone in the wrong around

if it has not your stiffy drive is shot

At the stiffy's side or on the motherboard?
It must be the siffy's side because at the motherboard, it can only go in 1 way (only).

Cheers

Will try and come back if it doesn't work.

Thanks guys

Unfortunately we still get some that have'nt migrated to the next level of flash disks etc.

Yes, it's at the stiffy side. Unplug the cable, give it a twist clockwise and plug it back in (upside down) it should work now.

u know that 1gb sticks are almost the same price at 1.44 stiffy rofl

plus they dont break and loose data that easily

Well surely if it's a stiffy dick then it is working? I'd be more worried about a floppy one :P

Right, out the gutter and back on topic.

I guess, depends on what he was trying to do with it :D

and sorry for the OT, back to stiffy disk problems.
