Port Elizabeth - A policeman was shot dead while investigating a stock theft case on a farm near Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.
Warrant Officer Leon Nieuwoudt, 38, from the Aliwal North stock theft unit, and another officer found four stolen sheep on Monday, Brigadier Marinda Mills said.
His colleague left him at the scene. Nieuwoudt later called in to say he had arrested two people and needed help.
"On the arrival of his colleagues at about 14:15, they found him with two gunshot wounds to his body. His official firearm was missing, but none of his other possessions were taken."
It was not clear if the arrested pair escaped. Mills was not immediately available for comment.
Provincial police commissioner Major General Norma Lady sent her condolences to his family and friends.
"We mourn the loss of a dedicated and experienced police member, but this will not make us despondent," she said.
"Instead, it will motivate us to be more determined than ever to win the fight against crime."
