Hi there

What do you do should some bugger steal your precious bandwidth? This happened to us recently.

Said bugger downloaded 1.7Gb and uploaded 250Mb, and this traffic is not logged on our Smoothwall.

We're already past our 3Gb cap because of this.

Fun..... NOT!

Immediately change your login and password with your ISP.
Go open a case at your local police station - but that's not going to amount to much.
Consider switching ISP's.

WebAfrica has a nice feature that allows you to only login to your account from specific adsl lines that you register on their website via an admin tool. Not sure if other ISPs have it so you might want to look around.

It won't help if you have malware or viruses eating your bandwidth but it will prevent theft over another line which is your problem.

seems a bit strange that someone was able to comprimise your bandwidth if you are running a smoothwall - with a bridge configuration...?

there are other means of 'hacking' the passwords - bit they are far more involved if you are running a bridge configuaration.

unless it's an inside job ? :(

All ISPs have the possibility of allocating your DSLAM port to your ADSL account. You need to get the tech support to call telkom to find out the specific DSLAM serial no. And you are done.

Also most ISPs aren't too phased about bandwidth going missing as they can automatically blame telkom and then charge you for extra bandwidth.

As a matter of interest...

Someone at my work went and bought a new Billion WiFi router earlier this week. He got home plugged it in and was amazed that it it was working perfectly without him making any changes. He could surf anywhere. He brought it into the office on Wednesday so I could help him configure it for him and to my amazement, the router was already loaded with an an ADSL account and password. It must have been a router that was returned and put back on the shelf.

So if you do ever return any routers make sure you reset it. Whoever account it was, was having bandwidth "stolen" for about two days.

HAHA.. so he has the erh one payment system ;)

Bernie your colleague is very lucky, the account he probably has is a telkom technicians account. They use them when testing the routers that people take back to telkom for being "Faulty". That account meens unlimited bandwidth and no port shaping wat so eva.

Lucky 1....

Lol Bernie

U lucky 1.... What kind of Billion router was it? Want to get one like that aswell....

:D Yes very possible, it was an @telkomsa.net account, I just assumed it was a normal ADSL account with telkom as an ISP. Pity I didnt know about this before. I wouldn't have changed it to his webafrica's account :p

It is strange, and no, it's not an inside job... only two of us knows what the user/pass for the DSL is.

I have my suspicions, but will keep these to myself for now...
