This was on my way to work this morning. On top of the Swartkoppies Bridge over the R59 in Alberton.
This is what stolen cables look like.
Sometimes they even grind the entire robot off at the base, although this time they just grinded the bolts.

When your top is corrupt it filters down to the poor, there is no repercussions as the chances of them getting caught are slim.

so they break traffic light to get inside and steal the copper cables?

isnt that like stealing manhole covers?

so if they so expensive to replace, why not replace it with fibre optic cables?
I mean sure fibre is expensive, but its more expensive to keep replacing robots due to this theft.

And apparently they are not cheap - the figure I was quoted by a council member was outrageous! Can't remember what it was, but I was floored.
That's the problem with the TIA style of stealing stuff

Someone scores 20k profits from selling the copper and the taxpayer foots a 200k bill to replace it.

Fibre doesn't carry electricity particularly well. Or at all.

They are moving towards copper coated alu cables though. Crooks still rip them out though because they're too stupid to understand that it's near worthless

how would you power a robot via fibre?

Reading the OP I scroll through this thread looking to see what stolen cables look like... I don't see no picture of stolen cables...

batteries or solar or wind power,

but all of those are targets for the criminals as well,
best solution is to put the traffic light high enough so it cant be easily reached

hell or surround it with spikes and put it inside a cage, like everything of value in SA already is.

How does one transmit power over fibre? Thanks...

Where do you think the R511/lion park and N14/R511 safety cameras went? They broke down the concrete poles those were on (with the solar panels and batteries) and stole them and the traffic lights cables.
