Hi guys

So my work colleague had troubles with his cellphone and wanted another one. Since we worked together on site daily he saw i got a new phone. After a week or so i BORROWED him my old phone to check it out for a week and then pay me. I then realized he disappeared over the weekend. He stayed with his brother and even he didn't know the guy was leaving town. Now its my old phone and its really not worth that much. All i want to know is it gonna help in any way reporting it to the police and blacklisting it? I still got the box and the IMEI number. Maybe the cellphone companies can deactivate the phone then????

My phone was stolden today, so this is waht I had to do.
You have to phone your service provider, get it blocked ask for a (IETC ref something didn't get the name) ref number then go to the cops and report it they will ask for the ref number and your ID and other stuff as usual.

I went through the same process a while back. I didn't get my phone back.

but theres no way they can deactivate the phone itself?

Oh all the networks could blacklist your phone, rendering it useless in SA.
However non of them will.

I've "lost" a few. Go through the process of going to the police station, getting a case number and the documents from your service provider. Then send them to your SP. BUT: Follow up with your SP. My experience is they do nothing so make sure that the phone is indeed blacklisted. Once, I followed up three months later and it hadn't been done.

Thats interesting, I had my phone stolen not long ago either and after phoning vodacom to blacklist it I was under the impression that it is blacklisted there and then. You also need the IETC (or watever) ref no from your isp before going to the police to report. The case number and what what is generally for the insurane if you are claiming.

Problem is many "underground" cellphone repair shops can undo a blacklisting.

But who-evers got the phone then needs to pay those people. So at least you spite them a bit. It takes 5 min if you go into a store, so just take the time to blacklist the handset, always.

yeah, it definitely is. When I thought i lost my phone I called and it was blacklisted within a few minutes. Luckily I found the phone a few hours later and it took about 4 days for vodacom to reactivate it. ;D
