So my daughter’s Iphone was brazenly stolen from her handbag at Gateway mall.
It’s not insured and I didn’t report it to the police at the time.

I promptly locked it and put a message of offering a reward with my cell number on find my iPhone.

3 days later it was switched on and located in Hillbrow.
Then switched off again.
Now I keep getting phishing SMS’s to give the farking thieves my iCloud passwords as below.

Is it worth reporting?
Will the police actually go to the place it was turned on?

Even if they erase it/jailbreak it they will still get a message asking for a iCloud password so the guy got a shiny paperweight

Was the address in Hillbrow a house ? Get a few police officers to accompany you to the location

Had the same thing happen with my sons iPhone (his wasn't in a handbag though)

We had to report it to SAPS for insurance purposes, but nothing further happened.

Put some ads in the papers saying "For free phone sex call : <their mobile number> If busy keep trying!"

When our church was held up by armed robbers in 2009 there were 23 cellphones stolen. Police sergeant said there's nothing they can do as there are too many high-priority cases to deal with and there' no manpower just to find cellphones.

I'd say it's got more to do with lack of willpower than manpower.

Years ago I started a thread here after an armed robbery...

After the Honeydew detective types had come and gone, I checked and saw my phone was still on, and we could see it was in Diepsloot. Jumped in the car and drove to the SAPS in Diepsloot where I told them the back-story and showed them where the phone was. They followed us as we tracked it until we were about a block away... Sent the message to the phone to make the alert go off and, as soon as we could hear it, the cops stormed the shack the alarm was coming from.
Turns out, the bad-hombres just "dropped" the phone there and made off earlier... Got my phone back 'tho.

High rise buildings in Hillbrow might make that much more difficult.

Report the theft for an insurance case number and then... iCloud and put the phone in Lost Mode. Give 'em a lock screen for eternity.

It’s already locked and in lost mode.

No insurance so didn’t need a case number.

Phone is off now but they switch on intermittently.

Here is where it is on find my iPhone and on google street view where it likely is based in the approximate address but I’m in Durban so don’t have any cop contacts in Jozi.

If anyone can assist there is a reward of 1k for you.

That number is used for SMS from various other spam companies so not sure how they achieved that.
