Is there any way of checking if a PC is stolen?
I have someone offering me really cheap 2nd hand PC. But I wana make sure im not fuelling our ever-growing crime rate

does it come with usual accessories? like mouse/kb , power cable? if yes then should be okay. stolen one's normally wouldn't. if still not sure, boot it up and check my docs. folder for any clues of former owner. if it is a home built pc, it's going to be difficult anyway. however if a propriety build like the ones at Game/Incredible etc. , you may be able to check via the licence stickers on front or rear panel.
good luck.

The police can actually check it, but it must have been reported and there must be some serial number involved, which is very unlikely with a pc unless an Insurance company insisted to have serial numbers.
A while ago I was brought a laptop by 2 ppl to remove the os and reinstall XP.

I was told that they bought if for R1200 and it was definitely a bargain. When I saw financial documents and passport documents on the pc I began to wonder. I checked for the registered owner and saw they matched the financial documents. I traced the person and he told me that he laptop was stolen out of his restaurant a while back. The insurance already paid out for a new laptop. Phoned police, bla, blah....

Much respect for you contacting the cops.

If the price is dubiously low then unless the seller is a good Samaritan it's probably stolen.

its a phenom ii x3 2.8Ghz
a 4gb DDR3 ram
500Gb hard drive
Nvidia Geforce 1Gb

All for R3000

The guy does have a store and will also provide an invoice.

It's a decent price but not unfeasibly cheap. I reckon it's legit mate. Doesn't sound like a dodgy backstreet deal.

Well sometimes people just need the cash or they immigrating - thats how how i picked up a HP Probook 4510s for R4000 (or was it R4500) from a friend.
Also got a quad core pc, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, 22" lcd from him for R3000.
Pity i didnt have some more cash around that day, else would have bought his Mazda 3 as well :(
