In August my Toshiba TG01 was stolen in Joburg. I had configured an sms sync app (Microsoft MyPhone)to backup my sms daily and now I have the number of the person using the phone and all the person's sent and received sms and can pretty much build a profile from the messages. Anyone ever been in this situation and how the police can help or any bright ideas on how I can get my phone back?

Call him and chat, see if you can trick him into revealing his name and address. Maybe pretend to be someone from RICA or his network. If he's dumb you could track him down like that.
Go to the cops first and see what they say, they might be able to track him using his number if they could be bothered.

Did you report the theft at the police when it was stolen? If not you may have a problem. If you have proof that the phone is yours like the box with the IMEI number or proof of purchase you may have a case.

There is an app called ilocalis for iphone which tracks your phone and a whole lot more,a guy in cape town had it installed and when his iphone was stolen he worked with the police and got the phone back and a guy that claimed he bought it at a train station for R750 or something like that,the full story is here.

This is what I would do,call the guy up and claim you from his SP(Vodacom or MTN) ask him if he has been RICA'd and if he says yes tell him you would like to verify his information and in doing so he will receive R10 for agreeing and then an additional R50 if he has indeed RICA'd and all his information is correct. Tell him R10 will go through now as proof and then the full R50 will go through when the information has been verified. Now hang up and send him R10 from Internet banking,and phone him back....More than likly he will want R50 and tell you everything you need to know or he is actually not stupid. Or do something like that.
This is why RICA is a good thing,soon tracking a number down to a person is going to be so easy and the scalims are going to pay!

What a lousy situation. I hope you get your phone back. Just bear in mind that the current user might not be the thief - he might've bought it from someone else believing it's a legitimate 2nd-hand phone. Be nice until you know for sure.
