I have been an avid reader of these forums for sometime now. Unfortunately recently it has changed from a forum to share experience and knowledge to a place dominated by negative whiners.

Let’s get real…

There is no perfect solution for high speed internet access here is South Africa. At present South Africa is mainly connected to the Northern Hemisphere by a small optical fibre that starts in Sesimbra (Portugal) and arrives on the beach of Melkbosstrand (near Cape Town) & Mtunzini, continues around the coast and end in Penang (Malaysia).

The cost of laying was US$600. The investors/share holders that paid for it want to see a big return on what was a very risky investment. Whether it be government investent or private. (wouldn’t you?).

Therefore the cost of international bandwidth is very high. Whichever service provider you use, whether capped or uncapped, international bandwidth will be controlled. If users were given full unrestricted bandwidth it could bankrupt that company in less than an hour.

If you read more about the technology available on the market at present you will see that iBurst is by far the most superior. Unfortunately, here in South Africa it has been so poorly managed by WBS that even PBA’s iBurst sales in Sydney Australia have been affected.

In the past couple of weeks there have been changes within WBS which should reflect positively on the iBurst service. Everything new has teething problems, some have more and last longer than others.

Until the cost of international data reaches parr with that of Europe & the US, South Africa’s internet will remain second rate and expensive. Until this changes, restrictions on international bandwidth will be obliged by capping and/or shaping. Though I am against capping, I would rather have a cap and maintain a reasonable internet connection speed than having an uncapped service where bandwidth is drained from the system by people who load their P2P client and download 24/7.

iBurst is not perfect (yet), but it is the only technology that has a future here in South Africa. Before WiMax is released here, iBurst will have evolved and then WiMax will become old news.

(If you wish to reply, please do so with fact and intellect. Please don’t bother if you’re only capable of emphasising a point with profanity or you write like a scorned child that is upset because they’re having problems downloading the latest pirate Top 40 music album instead of paying for it.)

It's your opinion Jivan and your yet another person who seems to lump everyone into one category, without bothering to notice that there are people here with many differing points of view, from all walks of life, of all ages from teens upwards.

If you actually realised that, then fair enough. Your entitled to your opinion as is everybody.

Fact is, that cable you talk about is only partially used and was partly paid for by taxes !
It's a national asset that is in the hands of a monopoly who set the prices as they see fit.

Other people here with more knowledge on the SAT3 cable will surely indicate the real details behind it.

If your comfortable paying 400% more for broadband internet than most other places on the planet, that's your indaba. I'm not comfortable with it at all. I think we're being taken for a ride.

As for iBurst being superior, please give facts to back that statement up ?
Superior to what exactly ?
Better than ADSL ? - hmmm, doughtful.

Back to your opinion - it's all very well expressing it, but don't try and shove it down other peoples throats with a "get real" statement !

A sure invite for a flame war... :D

Everybody knows Telkom is not the only bandwaith provider is SA. The original post started with a very strange argument....

My opinion is that people should NEVER stop complaining. As soon as people stop complaining the level of service goes down. The reason why SA stands head and shoulders above the rest of the continent (in my opinion) is because South Africans are never happy with half-baked offerings, and we keep on complaining until we're happy with what we get, and then we complain a little more.

Jivan hi and thanks for your ideas.

There is no particular reason why an undersea cable running from europe to SA should be more expensive to lay and maintain than a similar cable running from europe to the USA.

The real reason why international bandwidth prices are so high is because there is no competition on provisioning of access to the Sat3/Safe cable system.

It has been interesting to note that telkoms justification for high broadband prices has migrated from using the excuse of high costs of international bandwidth to the now commonly given excuse of the high cost of maintaining the "local loop".

With regard to Sat3/safe telkom is just doing what it is an expert at, squeezing the customer for all it can in a monolistic enviroment

jivan, welcome to MyADSL/MyBroadband :).

About SAT3, I agree with bb_matt, there is a lot more to SAT3/WASC/SAFE, and you can find a lot of info in the various MyADSL forums...it is a subject that has been discussed soo many times that it is worth reading that which has already been written ;).

iBurst isnt *that* bad, i wouldnt be on it if it was, great product for some crappy for others, take it or leave it

Interesting comment coming from you Slim... shows how two-faced you have become!

how is that 2 faced, i'm saying it works for some and doesnt for others and rather than complaining just get something that works for you. For me it works and therefor i will use it untill something better comes along

I haven't posted here in a while, coz i have no need to, my Iburst is very reliable, very fast, i'm so pleased!!!!!!!

oh, and have you noticed jivan not retorting ? ha... he's so self involved and "living in his own world" that he doesn't care what other people think

I'm amazed he discovered the internet and even that he could post something like that. Ignorant people usually go through life "their way" and don't know or care about anything else

I applaud him

What a statement to make! You obviously know nothing about this industry!

adsl, wifi, wimax, bop etc all have the same future - the differentiating factor is up to pricing and good management of bandwidth as well as people.

I too applaud him if he is busy reading up on SAT3/SAFE, enlightenment is something not accomplished within minutes, hours, it usually takes days, months and years, so let's give jivan a break to catchup ;).
