STOP STREET : going straight/ turning right-Learner Driver

Scan0009.jpg

with reference to my sketch above, I would like to know the following:

In this sketch there are two stops across each other(across the cross road), but there is no number below the stop sign on each side, such as a 4 or a 3 to indicate the type of stop,
so If A and B both stop at the stop street, would A still have priority as he is going straight/or even if he is turning left and B would still have to wait for traffic that is coming straight and turning left before he could turn right?

I always thought that even if there is not a number under the stop sign that it is a first come first go situation such as if B was first, he goes firsts even though he is turning right and A is going straight? Have I been incorrectly informed?

Please help me with this questions and only serious answers please.

Whomever arrives first, goes first.

I'm sure the number below some stop signs is just to indicate how many stop signs there are at that intersection, nothing else.

So Supersunbird, the rule about the car that is going straight goes first does not apply here at all if I understand you correctly?

It's first come first serve at a stop steet. If you both arrive at the stop street at the same time, be the polite guy and let the other party go first.

The numbers under a stop sign only indicate how many stops are at the intersection. They by no means indicate priority what-so-ever.

Sometimes common sense is more important than right of way:
My rule is that if all else is equal (even if not a designated stop sign), the car going straight should go first, since there is zero probability of a collision.

If the car crossing the centerline goes first, there is always the potential for misunderstanding, and a significant possibility of a collision.

The most famous victim of this maneuvre: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_James_Dean

23-year-old Cal Poly student Donald Turnupseed, made a [turn] onto Route 41 headed north, toward Fresno. As Turnupseed's Ford crossed over the center line, Dean apparently tried to steer the Spyder in a "side stepping" racing maneuver, but with insufficient time and space, the two cars crashed almost head-on.

Allan Gray even made an advert featuring a reconstruction of this incident: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fbiO5N_NNc&t=40

Gordon: Just remember you might have common sense, but the other driver might possibly not have meanig that if you use this common sense that you mention, the other driver could turn as he he/she feels that they were at the opposite stop first which could also lead to a crash then.

As far as I can read the rule regarding the sketch that I have posted is that the person who is at a stop first, goes , there is no priority for such as the car going straight

I can see that most of you agree that if there are two stop across each etc. the first person to stop, goes first regardless of whether one is turning right and the other wanting to go straight?

Am I understanding this correctly? I really need serious replies on this please as this will help me understand the south african road rules better

Yes.

But realize also that your common sense is also important.
The situation above is so trivial that even without rules you'd navigate it just fine by watching what the other car is doing or seeing if they wave for you to go etc.

So you're nice and wave the other car through. They take for ever to take off and when they eventually do, it's at super snail pace.
That's why the only waving I do is a thank you wave as I'm going first. :)
