Fascinating part of article? Demand is down to 2007 levels and Eskom STILL failed to deliver! Gov can't afford to give them bail out either way! Criminal charges need tone laid much like they do with factories when there is failure. This last blackout is criminal
 
I think the problem will be solve by giving Eskom people huge performance bonuses for thinking of turning up for work. The Minister should also be rewarded for his outstanding management of his portfolio.

These OCGT's are only supposed to be used in emergency situations. The ones at Wingfield run every single day. These bast4rd machines burn diesel to create electricity. The huge new ones at Atlantis run frequently. Who is responsible? Eskom. Stop passing the buck and trying to obfuscate the situation. Eskom has dropped the ball and all that happens is they get bailed out and then they can post a profit and then pay huge performance bonuses.

That this is allowed to keep happening shows that this country is doomed under the useless wANCers.
 
Love this article. Even March 6's blackouts have a scathing reply.

At least this regulator is airing their views on the matter, and add to that the argument is perfectly logical which is commendable. If there are to be any consequences to Eskom's bungling remains to be seen though....
 
I heard a rumour (and that is all that it is until substantiated) that Eskom's day of load-shedding had more to do with ensuring that there was money to pay management bonuses than paying for coal at the time (presumably a Financial Year End cash-flow shortage).

Article states that they should have had at least 40 days' worth of reserve coal at any given point prior to blackouts, i.e. they shouldn't even be paying for coal

Well that's the thing, the article also quotes someone from Nersa as saying that Nersa increased that 40 days reserve limit to 50 days reserve coal supplies, and that coal should have been taken from the top of the heap where water had run off to the bottom, and if the coal was too wet then Eskom must have been scraping at the bottom of the heap where all the water is, additionally the Nersa person hints that there should have been enough [highlight]dry coal[/highlight] to last at least a month.

The multi-billion Rand question:

What has Eskom been doing with the money allocated by Nersa to pay for and keep coal reserves sufficient to last for 50 days?

I would not be surprised if Brian Dames is planning to emigrate before all hell breaks loose at Eskom.

My concern is, if they can't manage money, how are they managing their Disaster Risk Management Organization (Disaster control) at Koeberg? In case the nuclear reactor starts failing, is Cape Town's residents going to be safe under these dimwits rule? They're probably under staff and under budget at that facility.
I mean, that reactor can turn Cape town into the next Chernobyl...

I want to agree with you on this, previous government planned ahead 10 or 20 years in advance. Current government only plans on lining their pockets in the now.
Look at the Department Forestry for example, they have a huge backlog in planting trees, I've heard that it will take up to 20 years of planting trees to catch up again.
