Stopping in the road

Why do people stop their cars right there in traffic, in the fast land, middle lane etc when they hardly touched? You can't even see a scrape on either vehicle, but the drivers insist on leaving their cars right there to swap details.

It's the law (if someone is injured).

Last crash I was in (t-boned by some codger who cruised through a stop street) I pulled off the road for details. Mr car was sideways blocking the whole road. Had either of us been injured, the cars would probably have to stay there.

In general, people are clueless. Put them in a car, in traffic and...

You stop, assess injuries, if anyone is injured you stay put.

If everyone is fine you move the vehicles out of traffic. Most people just change details there to avoid trying to move the car.

But yes, it's annoying.

Because if you drove into me and only caused R500 worth of damage (a small scratch) You're the one thats going to be payingAnd how would you know its just a scratch unless you get out?

Simply - It's the law.

Step 1 - Get out and assess the damage if any.
If no one was injured, then technically if I can recall, you can move the cars but only AFTER you marked their position on the road (on the tar - would be pretty difficult if it was gravel I'd say). Also good idea to take a couple of photos as the cars are.

If someone was injured, then you stay put until a traffic/police officer authorizes you to move the vehicles.

In the case you described, it sounds like a very minor MVA. If you hit the other car from behind in rush-hour traffic, it is YOUR fault. The one at the back is always the guilty party. And unfortunately guilty party's often want to 'flee'. So the front person could justifiably reason that seeing that you are now stuck behind him, it's better to get all the details then and there, than trying to get to the side of the road and finding the tosser drove off. It would then be virtually impossible to catch him again in rush hour.

Relax. It's part of life. You are not going to die from being 10 minutes late.

I had a women drive into the back of me a few months ago. Her car was worse off than mine. But we did move both cars off the road (We had to push her car as the radiator was leaking) - having said that, I have no problem with people not moving their cars off the road after an MVA - it's just how these things go.

Drive for long enough and it will be part of every day life.
