Hi guys,

I need to do something to increase my storage space ASAP.

I am looking to buy a Western Digital Caviar Black WD2002FAEX, 2Tb, Sata6G, 7200rpm HDD and a Vantec Nexstar-cx, NST-310S3, 3.5" SATA to USB3.0 External Enclosure.

Should I rather go for the Green or Blue instead or should I stick with the Black Caviar HDD?

Caviar black have the longest warranty and supposed better performance. If it's just for storage then I would get a Green instead, will be cheaper, run cooler and use less power.

What is the difference/best between Seagate and Western Digital? The one with the longest warranty?

Warranty probably very much the same between all manufacturers for similar ranges (bottom, middle, top). You'll find people for and against each manufacturer, depending on their experience. Same as for cars: VW and Toyota have similar warranty plans but some hate Toyota and love VW.

Actually just realized Seagate have terrible warranties since a few months ago. Even though Western Digital recently cut theirs as well, still better than Seagate for lower end drives.

Since you say it's for storage I'd go with the "green" drives, the more expensive drives slight performance increase won't be worth it and the warranty won't help with data recovery if something goes wrong.

Also as mentioned Western Digital has a longer warranty for green drives compared to Seagate, so all things being equal that's a better place to vote with your money.

The best advice though for purchasing a new hard drive is doing a search relating to problems with it's model number and seeing if there are lots of people with the same problem, doing that can help you avoid a bad model which every manufacturer has at some point.
