Hi, i have 3 internal hdd's with all my personnel stuff on it my question is, is it risky to not have an external hdd to backup all my stuff incase a power surge or outtage destroys my internal hdd's, is this possible that this could happen? should i shell out on a large external?

Your HDDs might fail for whatever reason, so yes an external HDD(along with up to date backups) would protect you from this.

It won't protect you from theft/fire/flooding etc.

Offsite backup is recommended for all critical documents/data.

Having an external drive for backups is already a step in the right direction, but like KhoisanX said, things like theft/fires at your place would render both the internal and external drives useless!

i don't mind if one hdd fails because i have the one as a backup of the other one but what i'm worried about is will all three fail at the same time from a power surge or something? does that occurence ever happen?

I recently had a power surge, it blew mu PSU,Mobo but all 5 drives were ok.

PS: Why not get a surge protector plug?

I have the following setup:

Google drive sync for important documents and files eg exam past papers which took years to collect (Im a registrar in surgery)
2 external HDD also to back up stuff.
Surge protector (cos the PC cost alot as well to replace compared to a R200 surge protector)

If someone breaks in and steals all 3 then you're facing the same problem. Offsite or cloud backup of important data is the best solution.

Hi there,
Yes you need to make sure that your data is backed up either to a external that you store away fro the PC or make use of the cloud solutions available.

Regards

Tim
