Store (Sandton), equipment / set-up recommendations - DD-WRT network ?

Hi all,

I need to setup a 'bullet-proof' home wifi network for a IT-nonsavvy friend--light user (web browsing, maybe streaming, 3 users) but a setup where I won't need to constantly troubleshoot the network connections / software layer.

Basically, I am looking for a store recommendation where I can get dd-wrt compatible equipment for a home wifi network. I was thinking of getting one router and two bridge / extender units that are compatible with installation ofr dd-wrt firmware.

Can you please point me in the right direction (right equipment choices, right store / contact person)?

Hi There,
Incredible connection used to stock these items. Not the cheapest place to purchase equipment and I have found the staff at Sandton City to be pretty knowledgeable.
PC International in Bram Fischer are also very knowledgeable and it is not that far from Sandton

For a "bullet proof" wifi network, you really want to wire your APs up to a central switch/router. It's a bit of a pain to run ethernet cables sometimes, but it Just Works after that. IMO it's worth doing it properly and putting in small wall boxes at each end of the "run". Trunking is *much* faster than glueing cable IME.

Ubiquiti's UniFi system is quite cool, and not too expensive. They have some very competitively priced PoE switches too if injectors aren't your thing (makes backup power via UPS much easier too). http://www.ubnt.com/unifi
If your friend lives in a wifi-congested area, and his devices support it, getting 5GHz capable APs (although they're over twice the price) is probably worth it.

DBG/Uniterm in Bedfordview can obtain (and *may* have) stock (http://www.dbg.co.za/);
Scoop in Midrand (http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/) usually carry stock.
Other people may well carry/be able to obtain.
