The infamous Storm Worm is attacking again. Ironically the theme this time around is love.
According to security firm MicroWorld Technologies the emails, with links to a bait website which hosts the malware are sent out in bulk numbers, have been streaming out over the last 3 days.
In the past the scammers have used fake YouTube links, bogus login pages and even Christmas and Valentine’s Day greeting cards. This time around the emails are ‘love letters’.
The email messages read: ‘Eternity of Your Love’, ‘I Love You Soo Much’, ‘falling in love with you’, ‘For You My Love’, ‘our journey’, ‘our love nest’, ‘Memories of You’ and ‘A Kiss So Gentle’
The mail shows a nice pink heart and a message that reads as, “Your download should begin shortly. If your download does not start in 10-20 seconds, you can click here to launch the download and then press run. Enjoy!”. What’s downloaded on clicking this message is a file named withlove.exe or with_love.exe, which carries a not-a-bit lovable malware named ‘Zhelatin.sg’.
Storm Worm was created by a Russian-based criminal network, the malware rapidly infected millions of PCs in Europe and North America and continues to be a problem according to The Register.
“Through analysis of the tactics used, net security services firm MessageLabs reckons that the StormWorm gang is a small group of young adults, likely to be in their early 20s, and from Russia. Storm Worm’s closest rival botnet, Warezov, is likely to be Asian in origin.
It is unlikely that the Storm Worm gang is an organised criminal group, MessageLabs thinks. Analysts at the firm reckon it much more likely that the gang is ‘largely constructed of a loose affiliation of disconnected but highly-specialised individuals and small groups’, united by a common purpose of making money from malware,” said The Register.
