Cape Town - A man convicted of driving over and killing a policewoman while trying to evade arrest will be sentenced in the Western Cape High Court next month.
Cheswill Adendorf, 33, was this week found guilty of 18 out of the 22 charges he faced, ranging from theft to robbery and murder, provincial police spokesperson, Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed in a statement.
“The [incidents] took place in April 2014 when the suspect, including his accomplices, was trying to flee from police during a vehicle chase from Gordon’s Bay into the Strand area. The suspect had been driving a stolen vehicle at the time,” he said.
Adendorf had been accused of burglary, theft from vehicles, robbery and stealing petrol by driving off without paying, among others.
“Police barricaded Broadway Road and a female police official was [knocked down] and driven over after attempting to signal to the suspects to stop. She died at the scene.”
The gang was apprehended not far from the accident scene, Van Wyk said.
The officer’s death was initially registered as culpable homicide.
“After many hours of perseverance and dedicated work, the Khayelitsha Organised Crime officials managed to secure a strong case in order to call on the shifting of culpable homicide to murder.”
One of Adendorf’s four accomplices has already been convicted and was sentenced to 12 years behind bars.
“The rest of the suspects will soon face a similar fate when they appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court,” Van Wyk said.
Adendorf is expected in the High Court on October 15 for arguments in mitigation and aggravation.
