Strange ADSL Sync Issue

Hi,

I had a new line installed with ADSL on the 11th of November and all was well initially - however over the last week or so I've noticed inconsistency with my ADSL line sync with Telkom. I have Afrihost as my ISP - the trouble lies with the line.

The strange part is: everytime it loses sync, I try calling Telkom 0800 375 375 from the same line (with a filter/splitter) and while I'm on hold - the line syncs!
As soon as I cut the call, it loses sync again!

Anyone know what the cause of this could be and any solution?

I have notified Telkom and am awaiting a tech to come over (2nd time now - the 1st time the tech 'found a loose contact on the exchange').

Thanks in advance.

I have no idea whether this is valid or not, but I remember similar stories on other forums where lines with poor signal (low SNR or high attenuation) improved when a voice phone was in use. Something to do with voltage increase. It didn't quite make sense to me when I read it, but it sounds like you might be experiencing something similar.

Perhaps check your line stats with the voice phone off and on the hook to see whether there is a difference?

Do you have a 4mb line?

If it's not happy and stable syncing at 4096k, Telkom will decrease it in increments of 1024k until you're satisfied over a period that it's stable.

i have a 384k line. i have it direct into the wall socket now - no phone or filter connected at all. sync'ed fine. -shrug-

...for how long tho? :/

also had this problem

solved it by plugging my telephone and ADSL into the ADSL filter

as my telephone was plugged into another jack in the house and the LINE part in my ADSL filter was left empty....

this is a possibility - however, I was still having the problem with a filter installed.

The good news is, since I have removed the filter and connected the ADSL straight to the wall socket, I have not disconnected. (it could not have been a faulty filter as I have tried 3 different ones.)

I think it works differently in SA, but in UK, you need to have a filter on each socket that has a phone connected. Maybe try that?

What's the line stats from your router?
