I received a call from Telkom saying they are replacing the copper in my area with something wireless.
Told them I have ADSL but they are sending a tech to discuss it and then I can ask him any questions as the guy on the phone didn't know much about it.

Anyone else received a call like this?

UPDATE : The supposed tech didn't show and as some say below it probably was not Telkom just some scam.

Make sure they are from Telkom. All Telkom employees must carry a Telkom ID card. Ask for their name and email address (must end with @telkom.co.za ).

Don't sign anything.

Ask why they want to remove your ADSL service and tell them you want it in writing as you want to escalate it.

Tell them you will be taking them to ICASA if they take away your ADSL and replace it with a wireless solution (such as LTE) unless they can match the TOTAL price that you are currently paying (rental + ISP cost).

Good luck.

please post again once you have seen the person.

edit:
and as McD said DO NOT sign anything.

and ask for info as suggested too.

I had a similar call a few months ago, they are not from telkom and will want to see your Telkom bill which I said I would send them. I just didn't send them any info and have not been bugged since.

Thanks for the advice guys, going to make sure they are from Telkom when the tech shows before anything else.

Phew hope that's all this is, thanks :)

If they misrepresent themselves, take down all their details and then report them to the Telkom fraud line - 0800 124 124 or 0860 124 124 (I cannot remember which is now the right one!).

Enable video recording on your phone and hold it up to your ear as if making a phone call - get some footage of their sorry faces and print out some screen caps to go along with the fraud report (if you end up submitting one).

Funny enough a few years ago a Telkom techie was at my house fixing my line, he did mention something about they going to remove the copper from the pole to my house and replace it with wireless tech, I think it was just a concept that never launched.

OP ignore those shady guys.

Can just imagine the press release from Telkom in a years time stating they've been wanting to install this new high-speed, low-latency wireless tech but everyone keeps ignoring their calls and filming their technicians.

Received a similar call about a week or two ago. It's for LTE 10+10GB packages. I simply told the consultant that we use more than that every month and we're happy with ADSL.

What if they are just stealing the copper, making it look like it is a legit job, it will give them authority over the whole copper system in your hood. Guess they are finally learning the ways of covering up illegal business with even more illegal business, and they say Matric exams have nothing to show for itself - good for them.

Anyways on topic; This can go two ways:

This whole thing is legit and Telkom is squeezing as much profit out as they can, before anyone can take them to court. If it goes this way, you will need to opt in for the tower to be as close as possible to you - or else you are ****** with latency and stability.
Or
They stealing your details or/and copper.

Only time will tell.

When is a call with Telkom ever not strange? Last time I spoke to them with an enquiry as to why my line was syncing at 4mbps when I should be able to get 10mbps so, after holding for half an hour and being transferred five times the lady asked me to hold while she checked my line and actually said, wait for it, "Why would you want 10 when I can see you already have 4096 on your line?" (obviously referring to kbps). I gave up after that.
