I have a home network consisting of a Telkom ADSL router, a PC, a laptop and two cellphones. The PC runs on Windows XP and the laptop on Windows 7. As soon as I connect the laptop to the net, the "receive" counter starts running and before long has "downloaded" large amounts of data, for no apparent reason. This happens even when I have no websites open and I have been unable to detect what is being downloaded. Only the laptop is affected and the PC and cellphones function normally from the same router. There are no other networks in the vicinity and stolen bandwidth is therefor out of the question. Please help!

Are you running an anti-virus?

If you are, it could be some kind of malware/spyware, and you could try something like Spybot S&D to scan your laptop.

Thanks for the replies! I am using AVG Anti virus as well as Advanced System Care. None of these have picked up anything.

net limiter will tell you EXACTLY what is being downloaded by what, and what process, amount, speed etc. Logs and everything...
if you cant find it with netlimiter, check your ISP data logs - it might be detecting something as downloading when its actually not... like my old monitor thought copying to another pc via lan cable was using interwebZ.

Sorry that was me, Just wante to download starcraft 2 didn't think you'ld mind. I'll stop if it upset you.

+1. Netlimiter works well

Could be AVG auto updating, though 100megs sounds like a lot...

I found STEAM was chowing some data this weekend. Vanilla start, watch an episode and when I paused I happened to notice the bytes received thing chugging along. I killed AVG, it still went on, killed some other stuf until I eventually killed steam, which solved the problem.

Netlimeter is better than killing things/trial and error. Damn steam added itself onto the auto startup list. Siff

+1 for NetLimiter.

NetLimiter 2 Monitor is free and it works on Windows 7, although you might have to run the installer with Windows XP compatibility.
I'm running NetLimiter 2 Pro on my copy of Win7 x64.

Thanks for all your replies. Heartwarming! I downloaded Spybot and it has not detected anything out of the ordinary. Netlimiter is the next step. Will keep you informed.

i had the same problem. something was downloading whenever i switched my pc or router on. after 900MB were downloaded i decided to just reinstall windows and everything was fine

I had a similar problem too. My machine downloaded and uploaded and used a lot of system resources

I got mweb to give me a new IP and then the problem went away

lmfao ... dude no

atleast you came up with a solution though

Thanks again for the many replies. My problem is solved and to my shame I must admit that I myself was the cause!. Although I have automatic Windows downloads disabled, I must have inadvertantly manually checked the tickbox for an Office 2007 upgrade of in excess of 200Mb. because it has dissapeared from the upgrade list. It apparently downloaded in three seperate sessions. I'll be more carefull in future!
