Strange Engine Noise! Help!

Big end bearing replacement isnt a very big job, does the noise sound like its on top of the engine (could be a hydraulic valve or is it lower in the engine?

Since you knocked the sump, maybe you buggered up something in the gearbox, go to a workshop that has a stethoscope and they will pinpoint the problem area.

You drove from 100km out of Bloem to Joburg, with your car in THAT condition? You've probably caused quite a bit of internal damage to the engine, which will only be revealed if they strip the engine to its bones. That is neither quick nor cheap.

I don't think you should be driving the car at all, nevermind for another 25 days. You could end up stuck/stranded in some place you wouldn't ever want to be stuck. You could also cease the engine, which is then going to be very expensive to repair, or replace. Either way, sounds to me like you're going have to fork out quite a bit to get this resolved, so be prepared.

Thing is, there was no apparent sign that anything was wrong with the motor after the accident (on the day). I only knew the extent of the damage after the assessor sent me the quote. Silly of me, I know, but I was 100km outside of Bloem, at night, in a not so savoury part of town - at the time, my only real concern was getting home safely. Short-cuts ftw!

R6k for them shocks? Shocked.
Mine are R1k including labor.

Don't buy a Honda Jazz, clearly!

Also, this only occurs under load - not when I'm idling, nor revving the car in neutral. The sound comes from the passenger side of the engine, middle-top if I have to guesstimate?

Jacked my car up during lunch to see if there was anything obvious. Noticed a thin film of oil on my gearbox - not a pouring leak - more of a "sweat" effect. One of the other guys here at work says he had something similar (re: the leak), and they ended up replacing the side-shaft seals (whatever those are) that had become worn.

And I totally agree: any mechanic worth his salt would've actually taken the thing apart knowing what had happened, i.e. me driving with a screwed sump. Also, now that I think about it, if oil had pissed out of the sump, why didn't any of my oil/engine lights come on?

A good clue that it didn't. Take it to Honda, get a proper assessment. It might be something much smaller and unrelated for all we know.

Other possibilities are piston slap (normally when engine is cold, lessens as engine warms up) or ignition/spark knock.

As Rickster says, you need a mechanic with a stethoscope

Does the knock sound with the revs of the engine, when you rev between 2500 and 4000 does the knock sound go faster and slower along with the revs ?

I'm sorry to say, sounds like Big end bearings or possibly maybe lifters.
Are you dead sure its the Engine and not maybe the gearbox ?, the neutral think you meantioned on the high way sounds more like a gearbox.

Thanks for all the help, guys! I'll take it in when I'm off again next Tuesday.

That might actually be something in his gearbox or drive-train.
What did you hit?
I would replace all the front suspension parts, including CV (inner and outer, with shafts) that have not yet been replaced.
As for the old parts else you'll never know if they actually changed the parts.

It could be the big end bearings, the symptoms you describe points to that. I find it strange however that the big ends can go at such a low mileage.

Something else could also be wrong, best advice is to take it to a reputable mechanic.

Big end bearings should make a noise at any RPM and not only under load. Perhaps a rocker or something? Do you hear a 'ticking' sound when the engine is at idle?

Explain how? were you drifting it or doing some colin mcrae driving?

Haha! I'm more of a Solberg fan!

I was doing about 50km/h on a dirt road, and started approaching a long right. As I was going around it, the car just started sliding out to the left - similar effect to aquaplaning I guess? Tried to counter-steer, but nothing happened. Eventually went off the road and hit a sandbank and a bunch of rocks.

No ticking. Also found a tip to check big end damage online: check for aluminium particles in your oil. Didn't find any, so it's looking less likely that it's the big end bearings. Still going to take it a mechanic though.

Where do you live? I know a very good mechanic in Randburg. Namibian, straight as an arrow - no tom foolery. I've been taking both my cars there since 2008.

Lets just say he detected a fault on my wife's car by simply listening to it.
