First let me run through the setup.
On one side of the house I have my DSL router. The Wifi is too weak in my bedroom so I have an ethernet cable to my room. I then have a TP-Link TL-WN821N plugged in to provide a SoftAP for my devices. The device has the Windows 8 drivers installed and using the TP-Link Wireless utility controlling the SoftAP.
I'm using Bitdefender Internet Security 2015 with the firewall adapter settings as Home/Office, Stealth=off and Generic=on (as per Bitdefender recommendations). The same problem happens with the Windows firewall and with no firewall at all.
Both my personal and business phones are Android and are having the exact same issue which tell me it's either the USB WiFi adapter or some setting in 8.1 I'm not aware of.
This worked great until my old Windows 7 PC died and I now use a Windows 8.1 laptop.

Here's the problem. And it started when
Both devices connect to the SoftAP great and get internet access. Everything from browsing to the play store work perfectly. The strange part is that the only thing that doesn't work is of I search using the Google search widget or try search directly in Chrome. If I search in any other browser it's fine. If I do a search using the widget it just loads but never finds a result.

It's not really a major issue, more of an annoyance but I'd like to sort it out and have some explanation for it since I'm stumped.

Sounds to me like the widget or bar is being blocked somehow.. you sure the firewall is completely off when you test it?
I use bitdefender and find that the newer versions are FULL of bugs and false positives. I used 2015 till i got so pissed off that i put 2013 on and everything is right as rain.
