Ok since I had my blood test done, I'm now thinking that in todays life Pathologists are making a killing money wise.

Ok what does one need to study and how long does one study to become a Pathologist ?

You should be happy with your results and move on.

I reckon it is the medical student dropouts that become pathologists - so why not just register for a medical degree and fsck around like they did?

/Ducks and Runs - especially from LabAnimal...

Actually, it's an interesting question.

And possibly an interesting career... although I think it might get boring doing the same old tests over and over.

(For the past few weeks, I've been thinking of doing a complete career change, except that I can't think of anything else to do. Forensic pathology would be interesting, though there's probably too much studying involved for me at this stage of my life).

Lol Pitbull
Thought you the entrepreneurial type...
Why not invent a "home pregnancy" type of contraption that tells you your results....
6 years of studying? Nah.....

hehe, would love to work for myself... then again Pathologists do :D

But your prob. right.... 6 years ? I'll be 34 by then 35 if I start next year

I'm with CathJ on this one, I also feel like a complete career change. But what ?

A bit of quick googling, and it appears that to be a med tech you need to do a 3 year diploma.

To become a pathologist it looks like you need to do a full on med degree :(

And after you have done your 3 or 7 year degree, you will have to start right at the bottom of the employment ladder again, cos you will be a newbie.

Not necessarily from the bottom - general business experience or management experience will stand you in good stead when coming up against "wet behind the corporate ears" graduates...

You will be suprised that most people would like a complete change of career, but then again, it all comes to time and of course money.

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised that a lot of people would like to change career.

I'm surprised that I want to, because I've always loved what I do. It's just getting a bit tedious now.

To become a pathologist, you need to do the whole medical degree including the internship and community service. Thereafter you will need to specialize in pathology for another 5 years, that is if you can get a registrar position at a tertiary hospital. So all in all to begin working as a pathologist it will take you at least 12 years, if you are lucky.
