it's an iPhone 3Gs.

the dock has become unresponsive, unable to launch safari etc, or anything in the dock area in other applications.

however, if I double click the home button to rearrange dock items i am able to slide them back & forth.

firmware 4.1 has been restore & freshly installed a few times now - no difference. i was thinking it is hardware related, but if that was the case i should not be able to slide / rearrange dock items after pressing the home button twice.

this is driving me mad as i am unable to launch safari

any ideas ?

Confirm the following:

1. Did you do a clean install, setup the phone as a new device and manually download and install your apps?
2. Did you perform a clean install, re-sync and add you apps and settings from a previous backup in iTunes?

The reason i'm asking is to eliminate the possibility of some corrupt app that can cause this. Some guys have blamed Pandora, the Facebook app and one or two others for causing this. Removing that specific app makes your other apps responsive again

Also, isn't there a higher firmware version for the 3GS than 4.1? Maybe its worthwile downloading the newest firmware, performing a clean install as a new device and manually downloading and installing each app seperately. This will prevent any previous apps/settings from your older backup to be put back on the phone. This helped me with one or two problems previously.

I've done a bit of research on this and just about everything I find regarding springboards not responding or crashing has to do with a phone thats jailbroken. It seems like jailbroken apps have deeper access to system files and therefore can crash the springboard if they are not written correctly.

If you phone is not jailbroken, then i'm not sure. I'll continue with the research and post more info.
