Hi there boys and girls,

I dont know if this is happening to you as well as with me, but when i download from the IS news server, my speeds are really weird...

Everyone always complain about the server being down or people getting low speeds on there 4mbps lines, but then other times people say that the get consistant speeds that is the correct speed for their line!

I have a 4mbps line, and most of the times when i open grabit and connect to the server with the NZB i want to download, i get my full speed, witch is normally between 380kbps & 420kbps.... But only for like 5-10 minutes and then it jumps all the way back to between 4kbps & 13kbps!!!!

And then when sometimes when i go out of the program and go in again i get my full speed for like max 2 minutes and then it drops all the way down again!

This really dont seem normal, because some people on this forum says that the speeds are good again, but then the next day they complain about it being slow...

But i only get this speed for like 5-10 minutes!!!!

I have a 4mbps telkom line
30GB Local Openweb account
Using Grabit

....And i have opened the port 119 on my router (TCP & UDP)

Any help or advise would really be nice..

Thanks

Hi Joe,
I have exactly the same problem.... also on a 4mb line.

But i guess you have not found a solution yet...??

I started this thread hoping to get a solution, ill be glad jus to get it running at full speed atleast 4-5 hours a day!!

Guys, only cached content comes down at a decent speed. The reason why you get bursts when closing and opening again is (I think) that as soon as you request a news message from the server, and it is not yet cached, it will start to download the message.
So, you open grabit , grabit asks for message XXX. IS starts downloading and you download it at the same rate. Then you close grabit. IS is still downloading that message, even though you are not. When you open grabit again, it continues to download that message, which is partially cached by IS, cause they kept on downloading it at the normal rate (10KB/s or whatever). So, for a min or 2, you are getting cached content, until you catch up with them.

Well, I think this is how it works...

Hi Sleeper,

I only download cached NZB's, because i read that NZB's thats not cached dont download at decent speeds!

So that could not be the problem, all the NZB's i download are cached.

A file from 3 months ago, like and old episode will be uncached at the moment. 15kb/s regardless of line speed.

A episode uploaded a week ago will fly at 300-400kb/s on a 4 meh, 50-52 on a 512line and 38-40 on a 384line.

It also depends on how many people download the file on been cached and how long it will be cached.

The opening of Grabit will give you FULL speeds, because it updates the servers.

Open Grabit without any nzb's inside and will still show a graph. It is only updating the servers/newsgroups at full speeds.

Unless they've been mistakenly reported as being cached.

You'll have better luck over at the Newshost forum.

What antivirus are you running? I know when I had news server access, Avast was the culprit, it has an NNTP scanner that interferes ;)

How do you know they are cached, it's not guarenteed 100%. People mark it as cached (even if it is not) so everyone can help them download the file.

If 50-150 people have downloaded a fiule in the cached section - it will be surely cached. ;)

Yes, keep this stuff on the newshost forum or even the "chat room" like bwana mentioned.

well, i run avg

And i am sure its cached, because i download new stuff...

I downloaded Stalker, Armed Assualt, 300, Wild Hogs, Van Wilder 2... And they all said cached, and some of them have between 30-80 downloads done already

That's a few weeks old.
