Can somebody maybe shed some light on this.

My pc was damaged by lightning and the power supply burnt out. Installed knew one but nothing happened, pc as dead as anything.

Installed a new mother board and CPU and it worked fine.

I re installed the old mother board with the new CPU to see if it was maybe only the old CPU that was damaged and it worked.

Thought it was strange and then put the old CPU back on the old board and all of a sudden everything was fine.

Any ideas what was the possible reason.

NO! And I dont think it was a shortage of love. Im curios and hoped that somebody can supply a possible reason for this as I never came across something like this before.

You are sure you plugged in your new power supply and switched it on?:D

Static build up? :D
I bought an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard many years ago. It "shorted" out. Took it back to Proton (when they were still around), but they couldn't figure it out and sent it off for replacement by Asus. In the meantime I bought a second set of motherboard and AMD CPU and ran those.

Even tried the motherboard with another CPU and my CPU in another motherboard and nothing would work.

Followed up with Proton on the dodge board after something like a month and they actually just didn't bother to send it back and replace it, so I went and picked it up. Then left it lying around for maybe 2 months and then wondered one day how dead it was.

So I replaced the new motherboard with the "busted" one and came back to a boot screen saying "no keyboard attached". I cursed ... then I realised that to post a boot screen means it is working. :D Duh.

Only ever swapped it out with the new board when drives started dying, only to realise it was a PSU going.

No explanation how for it appeared dead for so long, but it just came back to life and ran for several years. Only pulled out of service this year and I actually cut it up about 2 weeks ago to clear space.

Some wierd **** happens sometimes. Could literally be static that will not dissipate, who knows.

There is ofcourse the "acting like a little child" scenario where you scare the motherboard so badly it cowers into a corner for a little while until it feels it is safe to come out again. :D

Prof, yes I did every think OK, been building new and repearing old PC for quite a while now. Thanks for caring.

TheRift thank you for your reply, at last some positive contribution towards this strange happening.
