Strange Lag - is it normal?

I recently started playing Guild Wars, and am enjoying it so far apart from an issue where every few minutes or so everything freezes, I can still move the mouse and click around and then after about 20 - 30 seconds it seems to be fine again. . . for a few minutes, then it does it again.

It seems like normal lag but it makes the game unplayable (whenever it happens in a fight I pretty much die because I cannot do anything).

I am using a wireless network, but I don't really see how that can be the problem as I use it for Xbox Live without issue.

I tried also opening the ports as directed by the support site but my logic is that the ports are the issue I shouldn't be able to connect at all.

I am using a 4Mb Webafrica ADSL line (shaped) and playing on an EU server (not too sure about whiich one).

Has anyone else come across this problem? Is it my connection, or should I expect these pauses while I am playing?

I haven't really tested any other PC games, but browsing doesn't give any issues. I have enjoyed the game so far, but I really can't play it like this...

EDIT Sorry misread

Does your ping monitor spike at all? Are you able to click any abilities?

I can't say I'm having any abnormal lag such as you are having.

Try switching your district (via the drop-down menu at the top left of your screen when in a town or city) over to America (they're far busier too, meaning more people to play with) and see if it still does it.

I can click on the abilities, and they seem selected (they flash) but nothing happens until the connection restores itself. Where can I check my ping in-game?

Thanks, I will try that and see if it makes a difference - I hear that most SA players are on the EU servers though?

I switch servers depending on if I want quiet districts or not, or want to interact with people. Haven't experienced any significant lag in any of them.

I had pretty much the same problem, and in the end it turned out to be my telkom line.

I play mostly in the international district or the asian traditional chinese :D

I find lagg is less there.

Yes most SA players hang around in the EU server because of the time likeness :D

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will probably give my ISP a call and see of there is anything they do their side to check what is wrong.

It seems to run fine for at most 10 minutes then freezes up completely for a minute then back to normal. Must be something with the line...

Cleric ... you should see a little dot on the right hand side of your screen towards the bottom - it's either red or orange depending on your ping times. If you hover the cursor over it it'll give you the server IP as well as your most recent and average ping.

I'm playing using 3G, so I'm used to random lag spikes ... the worst ever being 45 seconds - this is the first I've heard of really bad lag on a fast ADSL line.

I also play using 3G, but I never had any lag spikes till a week or so ago, and my ping will jump from 200~300 up to as much as 60000 now.

My 384 line is also spiking the living hell out of me :(

Makes solo'ing a real problem.

Yeah ... strangely enough - during Winterfest I was enjoying an almost undisturbed playing experience ... and I say strange because with the amount of people online I was expecting lag from hell.

Now ... with Wintersday passed ... now all of a sudden the lag starts kicking in.

Just a note guys - the American districts usually have more people than the EU districts regardless of time.

It seems to have sorted it out now, am getting average pings of around 600ms. Does this sound right for an ADSL connection?

Yea, 600ms is about right to EU servers on a shaped account, it will get better at about 01H40 - 03H20.

Get a 1GB semi-shaped prepaid non-expiring account that is unshaped after hours and use it only for WoW and it should last 2-3 months.
Axxess sells it for like R80, I get 300 - 420ms lag on that.

Then cyberweb's VPN solution is giving some peeps results of like 250ms.

Got spiked yesterday afternoon when i just logged on to check something 16000 ping :(
