Strange Laptop issue

The field Rep at work says his laptop is going full blast, when the screen saver comes on - it is using 99% processing power, the cooling fan runs full blast. After logging in again, it takes about 20 seconds max for the cooling fan to run down and work normal.

Is this normal?

He's got a virus guard, set to run when the computer goes idle.

or the anti-virus...
or he is using one of those screensavers that uses directx, and his graphics drivers are a bit poo..

My work laptop does that - think it's Symantec A/V doing it's thing - seems to run a scan on the HDD, check e-mail folders, and hell knows what else -- basically cannot do a thing until it's finished. I wish I could disable it until it was convenient for me, but their policies prevent this from being done - a pain in the backside, but what can you do...
