Strange lights on dwarf planet Ceres have scientists perplexed

A dwarf planet is shining two bright lights at a NASA spacecraft right now, and our smartest scientists are unsure what they are.

As bizarre as that sentence sounds, that's the situation with Ceres — the largest object in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, officially designated as a dwarf planet (the same category as Pluto).

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is approaching Ceres ahead of a March 6 rendezvous. The picture above was taken February 19, from a distance of just under 29,000 miles, and shows two very shiny areas on the same basin on Ceres' surface.

This could be interesting. The fact that its located in the same crater means its may be leftover debris from the impact. Large deposits of shards of impact glass. Or ice that refroze after outgassing - recently enough not to have eroded away. And we were just lucky to be looking in the right direction.

The two other scenarios could be that it mysteriously disappears without us finding the cause. Or

The statement that any sentient race willing to expend the massive resources to travel through interstellar space might not actually be interested in us come to mind.

Space junk. We polluting the other planets as well now.
