Excuse the cluelessness, but upon opening my network connections i found an extra connection (Local Area Connection on Linux IGD) that i could have sworn wasn't there the other day.

I wouldn't usually worry about it, but after finding a number of trojan's on my pc last week i'm a bit suspicious.

Are you sure your not connected to a network? That looks like a direct connection somewhere bro ;)

I'm connected to my adsl modem...and that's it.

It's actually disappeared....now i'm worried.

Okay bro, no worries,

Do this:

To turn off file sharing completely:

1. Go to the Control Panel.
In Windows XP Pro, click on Start and select the Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the Network Dial-Up Connections or Network
Connections icon.
3. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties.
4. Select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
5. Click the Uninstall button.
6. Click Yes in the window that appears.
7. Click Close.
8. Restart your computer.

Now file sharing is disabled, this means you have to enable it again by installing File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. This is only necessary if you want to connect two or more computers with each other ;)

God bless

Scanned with Spybot - Search and Destroy and apparently it detected some entries in the registery to do with Firewall workarounds and Virus Check disabling.

I can't understand how that would happen though as i have Windows firewall up at all times and Avast!'s resident protection on too

IGD stands for Internet Gateway Device and is an implementation of UPNP on linux.

However, you not having any linux servers, I have no idea where it might have come from. Unless someone was connected to your access point? Make sure your wireless settings are secure.

I've actually switched off the access point feature.

God knows what that was, but it hasn't returned yet

Looks like you have uPnP enabled in Xp that is simply your router box or Internet Gateway that you are seeing.

Yip i agree, i have the same icon and its just the connection to my router...

routers nowadays run linux ( most of them) so that's prolly windows deciding to be funny and show that your router is your gateway

What kind of modem do you have? It's odd that it shows generic name, most routers, even if they run linux, are at least customised to show the router's actual name.

Anyway, all UPNP does is allow software (like MSN Messenger, Azureus, Trillian, eMule, etc) to open ports to your machine as needed for file transfers and other direct connections.

It also has the potential to let Viruses do the same thing as there's little control, but if you trust you're careful enough and/or have good anti-virus you can safely leave it on.

If you do want to disable it, you can either remove Networking Services > "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client" or disable UPNP on the router.

I'm using one of the new Mega 100WR Telkom modems.

My only worry is that it comes and goes. For instance at the moment it's not even visible, yet before i signed off last night I restarted the router and there it was again. The only way it'll let you close it is if you quick router restart and disable the connection in the meantime.
