strange reception with 3G/HSDPA

Hi maybe v3g can answer this question, because all i get from customer care is 'huh?'

Ok, on my cell id i get 'Vryheid high/3G HSDPA enabled' with a VC sim card. But when i do a network search i can only locate the VC 2G network. on my phone and data card, so i went to the base station where i am getting my 2G reception. when next to the Base station i get full 3G signal. But if i get more then 500 meters from it (and i have clear line of sight) no 3G. Where i am sitting now is only 1.5KM from the base station. And no 3G. HUH? whats going on.

We detect your myADSL ID and provide quality of service based on that.

Anyone with 'Vodacom' or '3G' in their call-sign gets excellent 3G reception. Looking at my dash, I've now been connected for just over 60 hours, mostly because I've got BOTH 'Vodacom' AND '3G' in my ID....

However, if you have 'Cell C' or something similar in your call-sign we put you on the lowest quality of service settings, thus I'm surprised you even get a signal 500m from the tower. I've asked the guys to turn it down a bit more...




Actually you've discovered why it's many times more difficult to build a 3G than a 2G network, with many, many more 3G towers needed to give the same footprint. It's all about the frequencies and modulation schemes.

For example, we cover about 98% of the population with around 5000 2G towers, while it takes about 1500 3G towers for just 15% population coverage. If you measure it in geography, it's even worse.

Maybe PM me all the relevant details and contact info and I'll ask the guys to check. It might be possible that they can adjust the antenna (away from your house.... )

LOL @ V3G. maybe thats why im not getting 3G to. i should change my username to Gay3G or 3Ggay or Gay4ThreeG....
