Howdy,

This odd thing started happening a while ago.
WinXP SP1 with McAfee Firewall and Norton 2004 AV on my system BTW.

While looking around for firewalls, I was testig around with various
ones like Tiny, McAfee, Trend, etc. During the course of this,
for some odd reason everytime I boot up XP and connect via ADSL
USB modem (Telkom one), it connects, but on the send button flashes
every now and then and sends a few packets.

I have to uninstall the driver for the USB modem (from device
manager), it picks it up again and installs it in a couple of
seconds. If I connect then it works fine. Any ideas? i've reinstalled
the driver and the firewall software (various combinations of this
as well) but still no luck. Also did registry cleaners etc but
nothing.

Any ideas? It's just a little annoying (but I can live with it).
Can't reinstall the OS at the moment as well.

I would suggest you sniff the packets to determine what is accually being sent. Sniffing the traffic specifically for the USB device would detail the type of packets being sent.

Chances are either multicast packets or have you possibly asked your firewall to log names vs IP's and hence DNS requests?

Windows sniffer available from www.ethereal.com
