I'm on UK turf with a smart TV so Netflix etc is easy here....but has also left me a little clueless on the tech side.

I want to share the love with family when visiting. Not 100% familiar with what sorcery I need to make this work though. I gather some of these devices have hardcoded DNS @ chromecast specifically?

Device wise...I need something that is on UK Amazon ideally. I heard they took chromecast off amazon a couple days ago. :( Can make a plan on that front though if there is a significant advantage in chromecast over roku?

Fam side we're working with a 40" dumb Samsung TV (free HDMIs ports) and a ADSL router @2mbps. (router stats can push 4-8 if memory serves, exchange is 20 or 40 I think)

I gather I need:
1) A device...Roku? Chromecast? (No HTPC stuff pls)
2) Some kind of Unotelly type deal (Will this work @hardcoded DNS?)
3) Possible speed upgrade necessary?

No ethernet near the TV but good wifi (b/g...not sure n..think yes) and needs to be pretty foolproof. Cost isn't a real factor...anything reasonable will do...IF I can carry the cost my side. Don't want family paying but that seems unavoidable @ ADSL.

To what extent can I legally share a netflix account? I know I'm on a 1 device at a time, but does the fancier plan allow legal sharing across family? I've got an Amazon prime video subscription as well. Can that be shared? (Legally)

Also thoughts on data usage would be appreciated. I jammed the fam onto some kind of capped WA business product to minimize problems before I left but that wasn't calculated for streaming (20 gigs biz quality data I think). Been out of the SA ADSL game for a year so some pointers there would also be cool (Please don't make this the primary topic of responses though...I can figure this part out myself if need be).

Device: Fire TV (benefit of Kodi/Android) or Roku 3/4. Both have a simple interface and easy to set up. I use a Fire TV and it's awesome. Both have WiFi, I can stream medium bitrate (5000kbps) videos over 802.11n without too much issue.

DNS: UnoTelly or equivalent. Can be set up on router or device (depending on device). Easier to do on router IMO.

ADSL: I would recommend a minimum of 4mbps for HD, but you can get away with SD on a 2mbps line.

You can pay for the device, DNS subscription, Netflix, etc.

In terms of legally sharing NF, it isn't even officially in SA yet, so at the moment it isn't 100% legal (which is not to say its illegal).

Thanks Shalin

Device wise...Fire seems to clock in much cheaper at 600 zar vs roku 4 at close to 3k zar. I assume they'll both do netflix so Fire it is then?

Lets assume I want 1080p. So guess a 4mbps upgrade is needed...

Fire TV is an awesome device and dirt simple to setup and use. Currently run an Amazon Prime subscription, with Netflix and Hulu on the Fire TV as well as a few other apps for on demand documentaries and similar...

Fire TV (2nd Gen) R2.5k: http://www.takealot.com/amazon-fire-tv-now-supports-4k-ultra-hd/PLID40660437

Roku 3 R1.9k: http://www.takealot.com/roku-3-streaming-media-player-4230/PLID38162536

Roku 4 R2.9k: http://www.zeekonline.co.za/collect...ts/roku-4-4400r-4k-uhd-streaming-media-player

Fire TV Stick R800: http://www.takealot.com/amazon-fire-tv-stick/PLID38162537

Roku Stick R860: http://www.takealot.com/roku-3500r-streaming-stick/PLID32802097

I have the 1st Gen Fire TV. I prefer the full on media players compared to the sticks, more horsepower, etc. But the sticks can certainly get a similar job done for a fraction of the price.

A lot of guys here rave about the Roku. Especially how fast and easy it is to use. I prefer the Fire TV due to it's Android base. I have Kodi, DSTV Now, Supersport loaded on mine, can't do this on a Roku.

If you just want Netflix and nothing else in the easiest form factor, I'd probably say go Roku TBH.

Netflix Internet Connection Speed Recommendations

Below are the Internet download speed recommendations per stream for playing movies and TV shows through Netflix.

0.5 Megabits per second - Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second - Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for SD quality
5.0 Megabits per second - Recommended for HD quality
25 Megabits per second - Recommended for Ultra HD quality

Don't think you'll be able to stream 1080p on a 4mbps line. Think you'll need at least 6mbps, so a 10mbps line in SA terms.

Thanks bro. I assume it'll make it past region restrictions with unotelly on the prime side as well?

It will but Amazon can be sticky with local cards. Can be a mission. And you'll need 10Mbps min for 1080p...

hmm...think a fire 1 will cut it. Don't think they'll jump to 4k any time soon. Bigger problem is the ADSL upgrade there...will have to think about that. I'm guess thats another 400 zar for 2mbps>4 and a boost in data cap...

That's where DJ comes in...

Cards won't be an issue. More concerned about the 10mbps thing...I want to pitch this as a gift to family so additional couple hundred cost pm on their side doesn't look great even if I reimburse it.

Indeed. Quick eyeballing of the numbers suggests the CW stuff is overkill though. A 200 zar / 100gig AH package would likely be sufficient while CW seems to start at 400ish for home uncapped.

Capped 200GB suffices for most home streaming and it has free midnight data. Don't be fooled by any el cheapo 10Mbps uncapped. Won't work. Our premium uncapped will though. So all depends on budget and requirement...

Ah didn't know you guys introduced capped. Thats news to me. :) See it on the website now but somehow missed it earlier.

Might actually do that since I should have a RICA'd CW account lying around somewhere. Are EFTs acceptable?

Also...whats the ADSL line rental only cost @10meg?

We don't do line rental only but the cost of a line for 10Mbps is R375 which you add to any account for a bundle price. EFTs are fine, yes.

Just remembered one important niggle with the Fire TV - no volume control. It's a bit of a ballache continually adjusting the surround sound volume between episodes and shows. Other than that it's fantastic. One day I'll have time again to play with it...:D

Cool. Will see interwebs side in Dec...I'm ZA side for 2 weeks so got a bit of time to make this happen on the ground. Think I'll line up a fire tv stick and unotelly in the mean time. ;)
