Do you have them hooked up to an NVR?

A solution like this would work perfectly for the street I live in.

From home > switch > cameras mounted to home
switch > nano > house on other end of the street > wireless IP cams? or another nano at the receiving end connected to a switch with wired cams

It feeds back to a PC running Hikvision's free IVMS4200 software

I have mine as camera > switch > nano >>>> nano > switch > PC

Have you considered something like Snipr?
This system checks each vehicle registration against the SAPS database as the vehicles drive past, as well as local lists you can create, and sends an alert to you if a vehicle comes back with a positive hit.
Not 100% fool proof but would give you an early warning if a potential suspicious vehicle was driving past.

So where does SNIPR sit, behind my standard Hikvision software or does it replace that software completely? Also, can any camera work with it or does it require special cameras? What does it cost?

It does require a specific camera - DS2CD4A26FWD-IZS – 2MP ANPR Darkfighter Camera with 2.8 – 12mm or 8 – 32mm or 8 – 96mm Lens - which, as far as I understand retail for around R7k.
The camera does the work of the OCR (optical character recognition) and sends through the reads and images to the Snipr Mini Connect Box (roughly R1.8k). The Snipr Mini Connect box then sends the reads and data off to the Snipr Server where the processing is done to see if the read is a positive hit.
If it is a positive then a notification is sent to whoever has the Snipr App installed with your specific Snipr area ID. So you could get your neighborhood watch members, or your local security company to install the app and get the notification in real time (normally within 10 seconds of the vehicle passing the camera).
