So my company sent out an internal and external ad for an available position one level higher than what I am currently employed in.

Last week I spent a lot of time considering whether or not I should apply or not as I met all the requirements. My mind was finally made up when my ex-boss, who moved to another division in the company, gave me a call and told me to apply as well as another co worker giving support as well.

Now I'm sitting around stressing about the possible outcome of all this. I've confirmed with HR that they received the updated copy of my CV so that's in order. They also informed me though that there were a lot of applications for the job. I would really love to move up a level in the company, not actually concerned with the salary at this stage, just the exposure and actually doing something new would be fun.

So, who else has been waiting to here on the outcome of a possible promotion? How did you deal with the angst?

I have been where you are. It's tense. Keep you head down and work hard at your current job. Internal promotions are much cheaper (usually) than a new recruit but create a gap where your old job is/was. If possible try to get to the decision maker and find out where you stand. They can only say yes, no, maybe and or lie to your face. Good luck!

Well the decision maker is our current FD who I have a rather good relationship with. Was considering testing the waters today but she's on leave until thursday...

Just carry on with your job. At least you have one. If you do not get the job, you still have your own.

It's rather easy, just know that you won't get it. And then be on cloud 9 when you do ;)

Don't hope it will be and then it isn't just think it won't and if it does then be very very happy. Works for me in all aspects of life. Like my yearly performance bonus as an example. I always think it will be damn nasty and I'm always happy with my bonus :p

Thanks Pitbull, seems like very sound advice :) My first problem is that I am the eternal optimist and always get my hopes up and then just live with the dissapoitment.

I can say at this stage though things are looking up, I just got contacted by HR to make an appointment for an interview on Monday. Now I start hoping that it all goes well then :P

Good luck!

At least you don't have to worry about retrenchment... Heard about a number of companies (especially IT and Telecoms) who have started letting people go...

I'm personally in finance in finance in the fast moving consumer goods sector so with the recent economic breakdown things are looking a bit bleak. The company I work for though is only planning on expansion at this stage so in all honestly I view myself as blessed.

Why stress about it? Its just another opportunity for more work.... ****it

Quit, go live on the government, and be happy

Stressing may have been the wrong word to have used, lets say that I'm anxious and nervous. Having spent more time thinking about it I would really love the other job.

Well its taken some time going through the entire process, but I got a call from my FD today and I'm getting the promotion. Have a meeting scheduled for Monday when I return from leave to sort out all the details.

Only anxiety I have now is for Thursday, writing my final board exam then :P So I was very happy when I got the call today, also appreciate the fact that the FD took my studies into consideration and took the time to let me know.
