This afternoon EMER-G-MED's RV4, RV9 and A09 responded to reports of a structural collapse at Eastgate Shopping Centre, in Bedfordview.
On arrival paramedics found that three construction workers had fallen approximately three storeys after the scaffolding they were working on collapsed.
The three patients were found under some of the collapsed structure. One worker was in a critical condition with a suspected head injury and required Advanced Life Support interventions. The other two patients sustained moderate injuries.
The three patients were stabalized on-scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

Eastgate worker out of critical care

Two construction workers have been discharged from hospital and a third is in a stable condition following a recent accident at the Eastgate Shopping Centre.

Nomzamo Radebe, CEO of JHI, told the tame TIMES the incident occurred between 1.10pm and 1.20pm on Sunday, 31 January. She said one of the three workers hospitalised following the accident had been in critical care but the worker’s condition had since stabilised.

She said media reports had alleged that the scaffolding the men were working on had collapsed although this was not the case. “Nothing happened to the scaffolding,” she said. “The scaffolding is completely secure.”

She said the construction workers had been working on demolishing the façade of the Office Tower building when the accident occurred. “This is not a project related to the centre’s refurbishment,” she said. “Rather, it relates specifically to the Office Tower building and has no connection to the operation of the mall. The area where the accident occurred is also cordoned off as a construction site.”
