Buying a cheap car, without warranty and service plan your best bet is something reliable like a Toyota or VW. I would stay far away from French cars like the Renault - parts are VERY expensive especially as the car will be out of warranty.

In my experience, parts pricing has gone down quite a lot since we bought our Scenic in 2001 which we still have and have gotten a few more Renaults since.

In terms of comparison, pricing is much cheaper than Audi and Merc (In our case with the cars we have owned).

What I did forget to mention is that a Renault out of warranty is only viable if you have a good mechanic... The original parts are good but the employees in the workshop not so much :banghead:
 
@ahoudet - sure they've come down but then I have a friend who's Scenic we had to tow the other day to their new house where it is again just parked cause its too expensive to fix.

VW and Toyota are more reliable in m opinion and the parts are more readily available and cost effective especially since the car will most probably be out of warranty.

I respect your opinion though and if you've had a good experience with Renault then I really am happy for you. No one hopes for car issues so if you've not had them - awesome :)

I am just thinking that if one looks for a car of R40 000.00 you don't wana have R20 000.00's worth of issues in a couple of months. And from what I know...a Toyota or VW will be the best bet.

Get a golf 3, or Toyota corolla. You won't go wrong try and steer away from the golf 1, the golf 3 has power steering. They are reasonably priced and are very comfortable. Corolla is nice as well but more high risk in my opinion the a golf 3, golf 1 is a dangerous, especially with hijackings and such
 
Yeah also laughed at first...but then thought about what this actually symbolizes. Nothing funny about pedophiles. Not a stab at you KoeksGHT - just crossed my mind and felt convicted for laughing.
 
Have you had a look at the Ford Ka? I know that doesn't sound like a very "cool" car but my friend had one and it was actually a fun little car to drive, had ABS, 1 airbag, aircon and a sound system. Hers was a 2008 model and I think she paid R45 000 for it with 62 000km on the clock. The engines are pretty bulletproof if not very powerful and parts aren't expensive. As far as I know they are pretty reliable.

Girlfriend has one. Great little car. Not flashy or anything, but really gets the job done. Good visibility, and no worries about fitting into parking - ie. less chance to scrape the poor guy next to you :P

The only thing about driving that car that didn't work for me was the fact that it did not have a rev counter or a temp gauge. Those are obviously things you can live without. Standard sound system was pretty good.
 
I have a bad experience with Renault cars, my mother owned a megane (10000km), clio brand new both cars went back to the dealership because of mechanical problems, maybe look for an opel corsa light.

In personal experience, I find that the cars are way better if it DOESNT go to the dealership to be fixed... Same issue I have with Merc... Came to a point that we got the car fixed by a mechanic while it was still under maintenance plan...

They're not that bad? They were meant to be a little city run about, I don't see how if you used it for around town how it could be so bad? It doesn't pretend to be a ferrari or anything...
