Student 'killed for drinking money'

A student was robbed and killed by his drinking companions after they ran out of money, the Pietermaritzburg High Court heard on Tuesday.

Zamokuhle Ncalwane, 27, Thamsanqa Mchunu, 26, and Simanga Ngcobo, 24, were accused of robbing and killing Lindani Khumalo, 29, in October 2008.

Eric Mhlungu told the court that after the trio bludgeoned and badly injured Khumalo, they put him into the boot of his Opel Corsa.

They then ordered Mhlungu to drive to the Umzunduzi River which flows through Pietermaritzburg.

Ncalwane, Mchunu and Ngcobo then threw Khumalo into the river.

Although badly injured, Khumalo managed to get to the side. The three pulled him from the water but instead of saving him, they continued to assault him.

Mhlungu told the court that Khumalo had stretched out his hands and they pulled him to the side. Khumalo lay on his back at the side of the river and while still prostrate Ncalwane battered his head several times with a knobkierie.

Ngcobo took over the cudgel and also hit Khumalo's head several times.

"Khumalo did not seem to have any strength left," Mhlungu said.

Mchunu then went to the car, fetched a brandy bottle, broke it and then made stabbing motions with the broken bottle.

Khumalo's body was found in the water two days after he left his home on a Friday evening.

He died of head and body wounds. The accused had pleaded not guilty to the murder and aggravated robbery charges. The trial would continue on Wednesday. - Sapa

Wtf is wrong with people? How can anyone be so barbaric? I really fail to understand how people can behave like this. Same goes for other violence articles, baby rapes etc. Surely you cannot be human and should not be treated as such?

But why did they only hear of it today if they were accused in 2008?!? Why does it take so long to get to court!!!!!!?!?

I interpreted the title of the thread to mean that a student was killed after drinking money.

Then I wondered "now how do you drink money?".
 
That legal wheel tunred very slowly, the accused probably have rich parents who have managed to stretch out the case as far as it did.
 
Yet rich parents who did not provide drinking money...doubt that is the case. Rich people kill for other things.

Rich responsible parents don't provide their university attending kids with drinking money.

there could be a myriad of reason why the case is only coming up now. Just saying "africa" as per usual adds nothing to the debate except to show off your prejudice.

Well fact is just fact. Do you have any clue how cases are just continually postponed in courts for trivial reasons. Therefore the massive backlog.

This made me say "what!" out loud. This news is just awful and fully agree with what ponder said :(
 
At a restaurant that I worked in as a youth the chipper was killed for a cigarette... I still cannot get my head around it.

EDIT: the chipper is the guy who operates the chip machine and keeps up with the HUGE demand for slap chips... just read that back and it sounded... odd.
