Hi all, I'm looking for a laptop for a student for about R8000, it will be used for some programming, web browsing and possibly some very light gaming, what are your opinions on the laptops at www.zones.co.za for this price range namely the lenovo y570 and the dell 5110?

Thanks

The Lenovo has better graphics capabilities and has a bigger hard drive, however I recommend you buy the warranty upgrade. The Dell just has a 3 year warranty with it but lower graphics capabilities and smaller hard drive.

Do you have any experience with Lenovo? Any other places I should consider looking at?

All students should be aware of the Lenovo and Acer student deals. Have him check the websites out. The hardware is fairly priced generally, but they throw in Windows 7 Pro and Office 2010 Pro, which are worth nearly as much as the laptop.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I had a look at that laptop initiative and it looks like a close one between the Acer Aspire 5750G and the Lenovo Y570. Anyone got any advice on that ?

Thanks, their range is quite limited, at the moment I'm contemplating the Lenovo Y570, any views on this ?

Hi, that's what I was looking at, I'm trying to choose between the top Acer and the Lenovo presently. No idea which I should go for ?

I was looking at those two at the end of last year, and eventually went with the lenovo, it has a slightly higher rated graphics card. Note that although it's listed as R50 cheaper, you have to pay R100 delivery fee for the Lenovo, which is included in the cost of the Acer.

But there's really not much in it, go to IC or one of the big stores, play around a bit on the demo models there and see which one you prefer.

If you're in a hurry to get yours, also give both of them a call and see if they have items in stock. When I purchased mine I had to wait a few weeks (over the christmas/new year break) before I go mine as they didn't have stock at the time. This may not be an issue though. I otherwise had good interactions with the staff at Pinnacle who manage the Lenovo deal.

I think the shipping is now free. How you finding the laptop? Contemplating it with the 3 year onsite warranty upgrade and maybe the 8gb ram upgrade.
