Damn this is scary!

Although the university must be held at least partially responsible - security should be especially tight at women residences due to the high incidence of rape in this country.

Stellenbosch - A 25-year-old female student was raped in a bathroom at the Irene women's residence at the University of Stellenbosch in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The suspect apparently gained access to the residence under false pretences after which the Matie student was threatened, sexually assaulted and robbed.

The incident happened at about 05:30.

Stellenbosch police spokesperson Captain René Matthee said the student was doing front door duty by herself.

The man pretended to be a friend of one of the residents.

Held up

The student, whose name may not be mentioned because it was a sexual offence, then let him come into the foyer of the residence.

"He said he was looking for his girlfriend," added Matthee.

The suspect then made the student believe that he had a weapon. She was forced into a bathroom at the residence, where she was raped. Shortly afterwards, he stole her possessions and ran away.

Matthee said the man is still on the run.

University spokesperson Mohamed Shaikh confirmed the incident.

"We learned of this incident with shock. The student immediately reported the incident to the head of the residence who in turn called the US crisis service and risk and protection services (USBD)."

Shaikh said the university had already started its own investigation.

Security cameras

When asked about safety at residences, Shaikh said the university is already at an advanced stage of a comprehensive project to install security cameras, especially at women's residences.

"Although a camera has not been installed at that particular residence yet, the USBD is busy checking recordings of other cameras at strategic points in an attempt to identify the suspect," said Shaikh.

An identikit of the suspect will be made available soon.

Anyone with information about the incident and who can help the police with the investigation can call Detective Constable Varity Moses on 021 8099191 or call CrimeStop on 0860010111.

Terrible story. 15 years ago girls could walk alone late at night in the streets of Stellenbosch, without any issues.

On the positive side, at least the US will be forced to substantially beef up security at the residences.

I was there exactly 15 years ago. Even then girls had to be mindful.

That girl made a mistake. But she shouldn't have been in that position to make a mistake.
The protection services should've had someone at every womens' residence (which was the case when I were there - 10-15years ago).

The USBD (Univ. Stell. Protection services) are to blame here.

There are a lot of horny male students there with the pressures of academically succeeding ... it's enough to drive at least a couple of weak-minded men totally crazy.

Why are students doing what staff are supposed to be doing anyway? Damn our local universities are crap...

Hope they catch this sick b*****d. During my time at varsity, Dr. Mamphele influenced strict policies at all female residences.

- No male visitors were allowed after hours
- At most undergraduate female residences, a male visitor had to be signed in and accompanied by the female who is being visited.

At my residence our rooms were free to open access to the street. My mountain bicycle got stolen once as well as my brother's. Bastards!!!!

But we were men!!!! And we ocassionally caught some mofos trying to nick our bikes. Guess what we did to them??? ....
We had a squash court that weren't usually used late at night ... use your imagination.

Hectic, I stayed at Irene for a conference once. The whole residence is sealed off, no entry without a key card, but the poor girl who did door duty actually sat in the foyer at a desk, no safety at all.

It's quite dumb really. You're not supposed to be allowed into a residence unless you're accompanied by someone who actually lives there. It's even more dumb that a MAN was let into a FEMALE residence.

FAIL...is all I can say.
